Culturally Responsive Education: Connections and Applications to Rural Northern British Columbia Communities
Abstract:
The purpose of this research project is to examine culturally relevant education that is applicable to the context of Northern British Columbia educators. The three main focus areas are willingness to adapt, teacher self-efficacy, and connection to community. This is important because as Canadian education works towards an equitable model, educators need to be given relevant research that articulates how they can participate in the change. The article discusses the necessary steps educators must take to address these 3 concepts and how to apply them to real life practice. While there is a wealth of information on Indigenizing education in Southern and coastal communities in British Columbia, there is a lack of connection and knowledge in Northern rural communities in the province. This article helps focus on relevant strategies to provide Northern British Columbia educators with a starting point to indigenizing and providing cultural relevance to their own pedagogies.
